Vi hade åttiotalets videovåldsdebatt, nittiotalets larmrapporter om tevespelande - nu kommer backlashen mot den sociala webben. I en artikel av David Derbyshire på Daily Mail kan vi läsa om att neurologer och psykologer ser faror med den snabba utvecklingen av ungas internetanvändning. Enligt experterna får de svårare att koncentrera sig, att kommunicera med människor i dagliga livet och blir fullblodsegoister.

“Baroness Greenfield, an Oxford University neuroscientist and director of the Royal Institution, believes repeated exposure could effectively ‘rewire’ the brain. omputer games and fast-paced TV shows were also a factor, she said. ‘We know how small babies need constant reassurance that they exist,’ she told the Mail yesterday.

‘My fear is that these technologies are infantilising the brain into the state of small children who are attracted by buzzing noises and bright lights, who have a small attention span and who live for the moment.’”

Rätt roligt om man läser dessa ord med bakgrunden av den hysteri som exempelvis Motorsågsmassakern framkallade i slutet av sjuttiotalet när den gick på bio, eller vad kontroversiella spelet Grand Theft Auto påstods göra med ungdomars empati. Är de digitala infödingarna generation stupid eller inte? Det får framtiden utvisa. Däremot vet vi att teknikutveckling och ungdomsvänlig kultur alltid stöter på patrull.
